Food Memory

Ni hao! Wo jiao He Jina, that is Hello! My name is Regina. This blog will explain why I am speaking Chinese on my first blog entry. I am new to blogging but I learn fast, so I hope you enjoy it!
This past summer I went out of the country for the first time, I studied in China for three weeks. While I was there I was exposed to unfamiliar food and there were times when I was hesitant to try the food, but I kept an open mind most of the time. I tried pecking duck, which is a popular food in China. It was my first time trying duck meat, it was kind of chewy and reminded me of rubber. It wasn't my favorite meal there but it wasn't that bad either. My favorite thing to eat in China was the delicious fried steamed buns, known as Manto, with its sweet sauce-like icing. This experience was significant to me because it was my first time being exposed to a different culture. The dinner table is a place of respect, and I really admire them for that. We ate on a Round Sally table every evening and the eldest person at the table would be served first. This is something that I wasn't used to but it was really interesting, because in my household the children eat first. I really enjoyed the food and I hope to return one day.

Its really cool that you were able to study in another country and experience many of the different aspects of their culture. I find it very interesting the way you described there dinner tables as places of respect. It sounds like it is alot like how the older days use to be like here in the U.S.

That sounds like so much fun! It is so cool that you were able to travel over there. I'm impressed that you try all those new foods! I wish I could, but i always back down if something doesn't look appealing.

It is so glad to hear that you have been to China and experienced Chinese food. It is totally diffierent from American food, right? When I looked at your picture above, I was like...Chinese dishes! I miss Chinese food a lot since I am from China. I can't wait to go back to China in summer and have a great meal!

I enjoyed reading your post a great deal. It must have been an amazing experience getting to study in China and learn about another culture first hand. I think food is such an important dimension of culture, and I enjoyed reading your reflections on how it showed you new aspects of Chinese society, such as the greater respect for elders.
